By testing the deadbolt you will quickly know if your locks aren't aligned correctly. To test the latch, use red lipstick on the edge of the deadbolt. The handle should be able to return to its upright position when you turn the key. Alternately, you can remove off the strike plate in order to verify that the latch is aligned.

You can also check the gap between the frame and the door to see if it is misaligned. If the gap is more than half an inch, then you have an unaligned lock.

An Allen key can be used to adjust the door frame fixings. After the fixings are installed you can make sure to tighten them. Don't tighten them too much or they'll make the door sag.

It is an excellent idea to apply lubricant to the lock, particularly if you have a heavily coated door. This will ease pressure on the locking mechanism and prevent it from breaking.
