In January 1994, Farrar referred to as supervisor Tony Margherita to inform him of his determination to leave the band. Uncle Tupelo split on May 1, 1994, after completing a farewell tour. Now a five-piece, Uncle Tupelo recorded their major label debut at Cedar Creek studio in Austin, Texas in early 1993.
